Children in Nigeria are being abused and abandoned by their parents for being accused of witchcraft. Many of the children's siblings are dying. Parents are thinking that the children who seem to be healthy are killing their brothers and sisters. There have been an enormous rise in orphans. Kids are being abandoned and are living on the streets for days at a time, until people find them and are caring enough to help them or take them in. Parents are scared of their kids killing them. Teachers, doctors and scientist are telling parents that there is no such thing as witchcraft so they will consider taking their kids back.
In an effort to help my students recognize the news media tendency toward shock and fear reporting, I have introduced a project to help students look for the good in society. They have created presentations on local, state, national and global incidents of kindness. Next they created a blog post on their favorite example of people doing good things for society. Please respond to them if you can! Thank you! Alison

If the kids have to leave on the streets and suffer, why aren't the parents going to court for child abuse!???!
